Individual vs Team

Individual vs Team

Some people prefer to work alone and they can achieve great results in life. It seems that this kind of people just can’t function well in team. In order to be part of the team, you need to think like a team and act like a team, not as individual. It means that you need to put aside your individual interests and if necessary put your needs on the second position, after the needs of the team.

I do believe that not everyone is capable of being a good team member and for those people is better to work on their individual performance, not being a part of the team. Teamwork demands some of the virtues that individual players can hardly overcome, such as:

  • Commitment
  • Sharing the same vision
  • Open communication and respect to all team members
  • Strong sense of belonging to a team
  • Respecting creativity and different viewpoints
  • Making mutual decisions for the benefit of the team, not for the benefit of team’s individual members

Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.
Steve Jobs

While team work is definitely not easy or easier than individual performance, it usually brings better business results and more personal happiness, as feeling that you are important part of some community that values your input and respects your opinion, brings remarkable joy and happiness also in the private aspects of your life.

As advised in many previous posts, stay true to your self and don’t pretend that you want to be part of the team, if that desire doesn’t really comes from the deep inside of your heart. If you do so (pretend that you want to be part of the team), when it comes out, it won’t be nice, far from it.
