In my previous post 3 Things you should never do a Job interview, I wrote about things not to do on a job interview. One of the things that you should definitely avoid doing is lying.
Let me tell you what can happen when you lie on the job interview and you get hired based on your lie. The team will give you first some time to adopt and to understand how things work inside the company. This period will usually last from couple of weeks to maybe couple of months – months only if you’re lucky.
After the team will feel that you received enough information and ideas about the company, you will start to work independently. Meaning that you will become responsible for providing the service or the product the manager or customer expects you to.
If you will not be able to deliver what you promised, because you actually don’t even know how to do it, your ass will be fired in no time. But it doesn’t end here.
Putting the company, team and all their previous effort in jeopardy, will put you in position where every single team member will want to destroy you. I know a team and a manager, where they went a great effort making sure that their recent team member, who was a fraud, will never get a job in the same sector. Not only that, they made sure the companies linked to their sector knew about that fraud.
Not a position where you’d like to end up. The world is not so big and bad news about someone, travel with light speed. You don’t want to ruin your professional life, because you made quick and non-rational decision.
An example for clearing possible assumptions:
If you would lie that you have diploma in marketing and actually you would just be self-thought, kick-ass amazing marketing expert, the team and your manager could cut you some slack. As long as you would be providing some good results, they might decide to keep you after all. You would definitely loose the trust as you lied after all, but you could still stand a chance.
But.
If you would present yourself as a kick-ass, amazing marketing expert, who can make incredible things and later you wouldn’t even know what are the best advertising methods for company’s sector, you would be most likely experiencing the scenario above. I would suggest to run as quickly and as far as possbile.
The Bottom Line.
Don’t lie on the job interviews. The truth will come out sooner or later. There are some folks who don’t bear with lying. If they catch you lying, they will do everything to make you regret it. Even if meaning destroying you completely. You don’t want to lie to such manager.
Simply, don’t lie that you are financial expert if you are not. If you want to be a financial or any other expert, you’ll need to make some effort to get there. And lying cannot be called an effort.
